What is a Neti Pot?

A neti pot is a nose rising device that is used to clean out excess mucus and debris from the nose and the sinuses. Neti pots were originally used by practicers of Yoga in India to cleanse the naval passages, since breating plays a vital role in Yoga. Tests have demonstrated that the use of the neti pot is safe and beneficial. The neti pot resembles a pipe, where the narrow part is inserted into the nostril. Neti pots are made from clay, glass, different types of metals, plastic, and ceramic. The most durable kinds are made out of either metal or plastic.

How does a Neti Pot Work?

Neti pots wash out the nasal cavities by utilizing gravity to direct the flow of lukewarm saline solution (salt and water) through the naval cavity. When using the neti pot, the liquid enters through one nostril and then runs out of the other nostril. The saline solution can also go through the nasal cavity to the back of the throat from where it may be swallowed or spat out.

Benefits of the Neti Pot?

Cleansing the nasal passages with neti pots is a home remedy to relieve conditions such as allergies, colds and less acute sinus infections. The removal of mucus from the nasal cavity contributes to the efficacy of nasal irrigation. Millions of Americans deal with chronic sinus problems. The misery associated with the headaches, facial pain, and clogged nasal passages can be hard to endure. It is for this reason many sinus sufferers have turned to nasal saline irrigation to relieve themselves of the pain.

Does the Neti Pot Work?

The use of the neti pot is on the rise in United States, thanks to a substantial amount of positive news coverage on TV and the radio. Ear, nose, and throat doctors advocate nasal irrigation with a neti pot for patients who have undergone sinus surgery, to clear away nasal passages.

Many patients with chronic sinus symptoms from infections, and allergies also have begun to regularly use the Neti pot, asserting that these devices mitigate congestion, facial pressure and pain. Another added benefit is that neti pot users does use antibiotics and nasal sprays as much. There is research that supports the claims of neti pot users, finding that nasal irrigation can be an effective way to relieve sinus symptoms when used in addition to convential sinus treatments.

  1. Fill the neti pot with 1 cup of lukewarm water, preferably distilled water
  2. Add the salt to the pot (either 1/4 teaspoon fine or 1/2 teaspoon of coarse non-iodized kosher salt)
  3. Tip: Extremely hot or cold water and iodized salt can cause irritation and discomfort.
  4. Lean over the sink or a bowl, turn head to the left 90 degrees so your right eat is parallel to the floor.
  5. Insert the neti pot spout into your left nostril so it forms a seal
  6. Breathe through your open mouth only, pour the solution into your left nostril and let it flow out of your right nostril into the sink or bowl.
