(NOVINITE) -- The Secretary-General of NATO, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, said Tuesday the alliance did not recognize the elections the Georgian breakaway republic South Ossetia held on May 31.

"The holding of such elections does not contribute to a peaceful and lasting settlement of the situation in Georgia. The alliance reiterates its full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders," read de Hoop Scheffer's statement.

The two separatist Georgian republics South Ossetia and Abkhazia declared independence after the Russia-Georgia War in August 2008. They are recognized only by Russia and Nicaragua.
