Armed Forces minister: Iraq abuse allegations do not warrant public inquiry

New allegations that British soldiers tortured and sexually abused Iraqi civilians do not warrant a public inquiry, Bill Rammell, the Armed Forces minister, has said.

Mr Rammell said the claims were being taken seriously and would be investigated by a special unit within the Ministry of Defence, but that allegations should not be taken as fact.
