Mr Selebi resigned as president of the international police agency after he was formally charged last year, but the case - in which he is also accused of "defeating the ends of justice" - still threatens to engulf South Africa's political establishment.
A close ally of the former president Thabo Mbeki, Mr Selebi is accused of taking money and gifts from a notorious alleged gangster, Glenn Agliotti, including clothes and shoes purchased for him from Harrods and a Hugo Boss shop in London, along with Gucci handbags for his wife and girlfriend.
