Britain must boost its production of fruit, vegetables and grains to reduce the country’s future exposure to food shortages around the world, a parliamentary inquiry says today.
Becoming self-sufficient in all commodities is not realistic but the Government must help to spread the risk for the nation’s food security with trading partners across the globe, MPs say.
Such a strategy is seen as particularly necessary to cope with any future collapse of the European single market.
The European Commission has signalled that in the event of severe food shortages on the Continent it will take tough action against member states that adopt protectionist policies. But MPs say they fear that some countries will act out of national self interest and they demand a new contingency plan from Brussels.
