In today's high-tech electronic age, backup programs quickly pick up when working systems break down.

But at 5 a.m. Thursday morning, when a software program in an FAA computer in Salt Lake City failed, the filing of electronic flight plans -- keeping track of just where flights are going -- came to a screeching halt.
