25 Mexican Police Officers Are Accused of Links to Drug Traffickers

At least 25 police officers were detained in northern Mexico on Monday, accused of having ties to drug traffickers, the authorities said.

It was the Mexican government’s latest sweep to root out corruption among police and government officials, which has been a major impediment to President Felipe Calderón’s battle against drug gangs that have made significant inroads into government agencies in many parts of the country. Last week, federal officials arrested 10 mayors and 20 other officials in the western state of Michoacán on suspicion of protecting the drug gang La Familia.
